I earned my eligibility through my son, McLean. Soon after he left for service in June 2001, the events of September 11 changed our nation forever. Like so many Americans, I watched in shock as our military members deployed to places I had rarely heard of before. For the next six years, I prayed not only for my son, but for everyone's sons, daughters, husbands, and wives who answered the call to serve.

We were blessed that our son came home physically whole, or so I thought. At the time, I didn't understand the signs that he was struggling. I didn't realize he would have to relearn how to live a normal life after everything he had experienced.

Then someone invited him to stop by our local VFW for a drink. What a blessing that invitation became. There, he found fellow veterans who understood things he would never share with his family. He found camaraderie, understanding, and support from those who had walked a similar path.

And that's really how my journey began.

Thank you, Candy Ward and Darlene Beck, for encouraging me to get involved. The more you participate in the activities and programs of your local VFW and Auxiliary, the more you learn about the incredible impact we have on veterans, their families, and our communities.

Over the years, I have worn many hats and learned countless lessons while moving through the Auxiliary chairs. This year will be no different. I will continue to learn, and I will probably make a few mistakes along the way. But every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and I am grateful for the many mentors who have guided and supported me throughout this journey.

This year, I want us to work hard for our veterans, but I also want us to have fun. We are all volunteers who have chosen to dedicate our time and talents to this organization. We don't all have to be best friends to work together effectively. What we do need is mutual respect. Bullying, harassment, and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. Our focus must remain where it belongs: on serving veterans and their families.

Veterans first. Always.

I am honored and proud to be part of this organization and to serve alongside such dedicated members. Together, let's make this a year of service, growth, respect, and success.
